Being Located in Tamarindo, we are just footsteps away from world class beaches great for surfing, fishing, diving, swimming, kayaking and many other water sports.  The great thing is that it is very easy to adventure with friends to find your own secret getaway.  For those less sure of their direction, tamarindo is the heart of tourism in costa rica and there are tours and guides for just about any adventure you can conjure up.

For the Surfers (and bodyboarders)

Welcome the surfing capital of Costa Rica, you are within miles of a handful of world class surf spots.   Ideally you would want to have knowledge of your capability and knowledge of the ocean and surf spot you choose. Here is a list of the local spots, with full descriptions and directions, to which we have personally surfed.

(1)    Playa de Captain Suizo: fun little wave that breaks at a mid to high tide.  Very friendly, slow rolling wave that can connect and go for 100 yards either left or right; on the right day. It’s a fun place for the beginner, to the intermediate.  Directions: walk straight out the gate through the trail and there it is.
(2)    Playa Langosta: Rights and lefts breaking over rocks and sand in front of a river mouth. Usually a little bigger than the nearby breaks in Tamarindo. Very Fun surfing, but not always perfect waves. Good spot with a small but mellow crowd. Good spot that can take a range of tides. On the peak of high tide it usually gets good across the river (usually between sign post 7&9 on the beach). For the intermediate to experienced surfer.
(3)     Playa Tamarindo: has two fun breaks, first being El Estero, a excellent river mouth break where the Tamarindo Estuary hits the ocean. Secondly Pico Pequeno, a lava finger reef which can get perfect with a swell. Breaks almost all the time from mid to high tide. Lots of crowds of people learning how to surf.  Beginner friendly wave, in a learning environment, with some local rippers in between.
(4)    Playa Grande: World Class Beach break with perfect left and right peaks, holds waves up to almost double-overhead. A very consistent break, Playa Grande almost always has fun, ridable waves, and catches more swell usually than Tamarindo.  Breaks anytime other then dead low. For the intermediate to advanced surfer, however there are many other peaks to explore up and down the beach for all levels of riders.
(5)    Playa Avellanas: About 5 different good Reef/Sand breaks with semi-hollow lefts and rights, located on a 2 mile stretch of beach. Good Mid to High tide break for the intermediate to advanced surfer.
(6)    Playa Negra: Epic right-hand reef/point break. Very consistent, perfect and powerful, known as one of the best breaks in Costa Rica. Playa Negra starts to really turn on when it's a couple feet overhead, and can hold almost triple overhead without closing out. Very playful and fun surfing when its around head high. Advanced Surfers! Every tide accept dead low, unless you want to slalom through the reef.
(7)    Witch’s Rock: One of the most famous waves in the country, known for its hollow rights, and lefts on smaller days, every surfer that comes to Costa Rica wants to surf Witch’s. Best mid to high tide. Boat access is best.
(8)    Ollies Point: Fast Hollow point break made famous from the movie Endless Summer II.  Great wave during higher tides, the wave breaks for so long, your legs become jelly! Boat Access only!
